The Greatest Hits Live tour kicked off at Sheffield Arena on April 12, 2019 featuring a 10m diameter LED covered revolving and transforming sphere as its centre piece.
Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Gary Barlow are celebrating Take That’s thirtieth anniversary with a stadium and arena tour that will see them perform 38 shows across the UK.
Paying homage to their Odyssey Album logo, the sphere is the design’s focal point around which all other staging and show elements revolve and gravitate. The audience first encounters this object as a giant black hole that draws all of the attention without revealing its true show powers.
Pulsating to the mysterious soundscape, the sphere revolves towards the audience and displays the distinct cut out geometry of the logo in an explosion of colours and movement on all of the video screens.
Placed in the epicentre 8m above the ground the band appears through a set of revolving doors and steps onto the D shaped moving platform to perform their first song, Greatest Day.
The 13m tall sphere is a complex piece of engineering full of complicated moving parts and sophisticated control systems. Weighing over 40 tons, its structural core rises through the centre and acts as a conduit through which all power, people and data is channelled to bring the sphere alive for the band and their fans.
Embedded within the main elliptical shaped stage, a lift rises to meet the band and takes them down to stage level.
Two separate smaller lifts to the left and right allow for props and pianos to pop up from below the stage and deliver seamless transitions between richly choreographed and beautifully costumed scenes.
The five musicians are placed to the left and right of the sphere on raised smaller elliptical stages that are easily accessible by the band and their 16 dancers. A 34m wide x 13m tall LED screen spans the full width of the stage and gives the sphere and surrounding show a vibrant backdrop to evolve and surprise the audience throughout the show.
