A selection of magical evening shows in selected cities from New York to Los Angeles, London to Madrid. This intimate theatre experience was a wonderful chance to collaborate with Bono to make a minimalist setting with some key props
and projection surfaces for him to tell stories and sing songs. Backed by Jacknife Lee on keyboards and percussion, cellist Kate Ellis; singer and keyboards & vocalist Gemma Doherty.
The shows were to celebrate his recently released memoir, “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.” The book. The theme of the set design emulated the energetic and delicate hand drawn sketches that Bono has created for the book where we interpreted them into the stage furniture and floor hand-painted textures.
The simple styled furniture is all manipulated by Bono through the show to create different scenes and at times act as the characters in the story, whether it’s other members of the band, his father Bob, or his wife Ali.
The dual projected backdrops are inspired by the pages of the book and throughout the show these show Bono’s illustrations from the book, sometimes as static images and sometimes and animated sketches.
