Noah Kahan's fourth studio album, The Great Divide, is a deeply personal work written through the lens of his own upbringing in Stafford, Vermont.
The album explores the complex and often contradictory nature of the human experience:
The feeling of being homesick, only to discover that home no longer feels like somewhere you belong; of being both nostalgic and resentful of where you came from; deeply missing your family while simultaneously pushing those closest to you away; and of achieving extraordinary success and recognition while still struggling with profound loneliness and self-doubt.
STUFISH worked together with the creative team to develop the concept for the show; a stage that conjures a tangible manifestation of home but transforms, distorts and transports the audience through time and space throughout the show.
The audience enters a world that references the artist’s hometown; –
Catwalks weave across the floor, originating at a weathered pontoon dock framed by aged wooden posts. From here, the walkway divides into two contrasting paths; one of concrete walkway and one resembling a forest floor. The three catwalk treatments draw inspiration from environments in his hometown, while also evoking the many paths we navigate—both physically through place and metaphorically through life.
The paths split then winds and undulate as they approach opposite sides of the main stage; The concrete walkway leads to a gas station complete with an old Volvo, pump and sign for general store, whilst the forest path becomes overgrown with greenery and snakes up to a rocky knoll on the other side of the stage.
The show begins with the house assembling piece by piece. Carpenters first erect its columns before constructing the porch door, as the roof slowly descends from above. Its windows glow with life before settling into place on top of the columns. Finally, the digital façade fades into view, completing the familiar silhouette of a home before the artist enters the stage through the video screen from the porch door.
Initially appearing as a solid, permanent structure, its ever-changing digital façade allows the house to transform throughout the show, shifting through seasons and changing forms.
Integrating the digital and physical environments presented a creative challenge for the team. The objective was to create the illusion of home—one that appears convincing at first glance but begins to dissolve from certain viewpoints, reflecting the idea that a place can look and feel like home without truly being so.
To achieve this, the scenic treatment of the physical roof was extended across the digital façade using high-resolution photography of the physical set, blurring the boundary of the physical and digital architecture. Digital windows, designed in the same architectural language, were positioned on either side of the physical doors to reinforce this continuity. The team also carefully matched the lighting from the physical rig within the digital environments, ensuring the house sat naturally within its virtual surroundings and maintained a cohesive sense of place.
The House also had the ability to physically transform; At one point, the roof lowers towards the ground for the artist to perform on the gable in a very intimate moment during the show the horizon of the background adjusting with it to continue the illusion. At another, it flies out completely giving way to a large panoramic screen.
Rather than serving as a static piece of scenery, the house becomes a living metaphor for the album itself. Constantly evolving between physical and digital forms, it embodies the instability of memory and belonging, inviting the audience to experience home not as a fixed destination, but as something continually reshaped by time, perspective and personal experience.
