Winning Design proposal to restore a beloved performing arts centre to its place at the heart of the neighbourhood
In answer to a design competition to ‘explore potential ideas of marking the Keller Auditorium as a centrepiece of the neighbourhood’, STUFISH worked in collaboration with Michael Curry Design to revive The Keller Auditorium, a 2,992-capacity venue located in Portland, Oregon. The venue often hosts the Portland Opera and the Oregon Ballet. Our answer was to focus on creating contemporary, usable space that could be enjoyed in exciting new ways.
The design for The Keller Auditorium greets you with a new primary curving facade. The extended first and second floor lobbies extend as a cantilevered sweep of glass. This partially covers a public plaza that extends into a newly-pedestrianised area, connecting the venue to the Ira Keller Fountain.
A space for outside performance now reflects and compliments the events within. The expanded first and second floors allow for a bar and restaurant, with enhanced views of the fountain and outdoor performances, while the extended lobbies provide an ease of access to auditorium events.
